There are 45 conservation areas in Bromley. The council has designed each one because of its special architectural or historic interest. Designation aims to protect an areas character and appearance by managing change in a sympathetic way. This is done through town planning legislation and the Local Plan (Policies 41,42 and 43). The council has adopted guidance for various conservation areas to help define the special architectural and historic interest of these areas and to clarify why they merits 'designation'
There are some additional planning controls in conservation areas and trees are given protection. Supplementary Planning Guidance notes have been prepared for most of our conservation areas to assist residents and developers. Find out more about making a planning application.

The council recently consulted on proposals to designate two new conservation areas, known as The Thrifts conservation area and The Covert conservation area and a proposed extension to the existing Chislehurst Road conservation area.
The proposed new/extended conservation areas have been informed by an independent report prepared by the Built Environment Advisory and Management Service (BEAMS)
We are currently reviewing responses received during the consultation, before deciding whether or not to formally designate the proposed conservation areas. Any decision to designate the new/extended conservation areas is a matter for the council’s Executive.
