Discovering plants (KS2)*

A fun and informative day, adapted to suit each of the seasons.


This course gives an insight into the enormous variety of plants and some of the many adaptations required for life in different habitats (woodland, pond and meadow). Structure, growth, importance for light, life cycles are amongst the many areas to be addressed. 

Areas covered

  • observing a variety of plants in different habitats
  • getting to know plants through awareness activities
  • a close look at the effects of light especially on nettles
  • the importance of plants as homes, food, oxygen supply
  • collection of plants and parts of plants - this will vary with the season and the emphasis for Attainment Target (AT) 2: 3d will vary accordingly
  • In the classroom: 

    • observation of plants to look at details
    • identification and use of keys
    • life cycles
    • close look at pollen varieties using the video-microscope  to magnify to 500x their size (seasonal)

    Minimum of 2 classes required for the half day option.
