Very best wishes and heartfelt congratulations go to Emma Raducanu on behalf of all of Bromley for her epic performance and win in the US Open tennis final in New York last night (11 September).
Emma who attended Bickley Primary School and latterly Newstead Wood School in the borough has made history as the first qualifier to reach the final and win a Grand Slam title, as well as the first British woman to do so since the 1970s.
Bromley’s Mayor, Councillor Russell Mellor said: “This is such a remarkable achievement, and especially for one so young and fresh to the tennis circuit. I should like to pass on my personal good wishes and admiration, as well as on behalf of Bromley residents.
“Both she and her opponent gave stunning performances on the night, but Emma’s cool head and tenacity won through to a truly fairy-tale finish. This young woman provides such a wonderful role model for our young people. We wish her every success in her career as we celebrate this proud moment for Emma and her links with our fantastic borough. We will be looking into a fitting welcome back to Bromley for Emma upon her return to the country.”
