A tulip tree has been planted by the Deputy Mayor, with around 300 trees now planted so far this winter season as part of the council’s treemendous planting initiative.

The Liriodendron tulipifera is known for its seasonal colours and tulip shaped flowers as well as its large size, reaching heights of over 20 metres (65 feet) when mature. Tulip trees are just one of the council’s selection of species set to be planted around the borough; each tree bringing colour to our streets and verges, carefully selected for the location it’s being planted in to avoid outgrowing and disrupting its surroundings in later years.

The £1.35 million initiative is Bromley’s largest funded green project to date, and this tree – as well as thousands more – will be planted over the next 4 years as part of the borough’s continuous mission to establish Bromley as London’s greenest borough. The proposed 5000 trees will also contribute to the council’s objective of reaching net zero emissions by 2029.

Bromley’s Deputy Mayor Councillor Tony Owen, accompanied by his consort Rosie, fittingly planted the tree in his ward, Petts Wood and Knoll. The tulip tree was planted near to the grass verge on St. Kilda Road in Orpington, where a previous mature tree had been sadly blown over in a winter storm 8 years ago. The Deputy Mayor said, “as generations of us have seen the trees around us mature, and sometimes sadly fall, future generations will see this tulip tree as it matures. I am delighted to have planted this tulip tree in this special place where we can all watch it grow year by year with the promise of amazing flowers in years to come.”

Councillor Will Harmer, Chairman of Environment and Community PDS Committee, shares his delight with the project so far: “we have made treemendous progress in our planting programme since we began in November. Seeing new trees popping up around the borough brings a smile to my face and I’m especially grateful for the support from residents for Tree Friends. Your support does not go unnoticed, and if you would like to help look after these new trees then please sign up to become a Tree Friend today.”
