The craning in of the new housing at York Rise in Orpington marks a key milestone in the construction of 35 more Bromley homes for Bromley people to be completed next year.
The new 100 percent affordable housing will comprise a block of terraced maisonettes of two/three storeys and a four-storey modern apartment building, with each new home having a balcony, terrace or garden. The housing development is delivered using modern methods of construction to efficiently build the housing units offsite, before being delivered and craned into place. The remaining site works will now be carried out, with the site expected to be completed next summer.
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, who witnessed some of the craning in, said: “I am pleased to see this development begin to take shape with the impressive craning in of the housing. This is our largest development to date following three further Bromley Homes for Bromley People developments delivered across the borough this year. This programme is essential for increasing the supply of affordable housing in Bromley as it provides homes for families who need them, while reducing our expenditure on expensive, night paid accommodation. I look forward to seeing this housing complete so that Bromley residents can move in and enjoy their new homes.”
This modular development is being delivered in partnership with contractors M-AR and will be made up of 14 one-bed, 17 two-bed and 4 three-bed homes. The development also includes four wheelchair-accessible units, each with their own Blue Badge parking space. In addition, 65 cycle parking spaces are being provided.
Mark Fox, operations director at M-AR, the council’s appointed contractor, said: “This is the third project we’ve delivered for Bromley Council in the last 12 months as part of the Bromley Homes for Bromley People initiative. The craning in is a crucial milestone and it’s great to see the modules which we’ve manufactured in our factory arriving safely on site and to watch the development as it transforms very quickly. I want to thank local residents for their understanding and cooperation, particularly during the delivery of the housing modules to site in recent weeks. We’re now into the final phase of the project, which marks an end to the vehicle intensive stage of the works as we near completion in the coming months. Seamless delivery of projects like this is a great way to demonstrate the value of offsite construction, especially when working on challenging sites such as this where we’re surrounded by neighbouring properties.”
The site is located at York Rise off Crofton Road and is included as a site for housing in Bromley’s Local Plan. Rivington Street Studio are the architects for the project.
Three housing developments have been completed by the council this year, representing an initial £10m housing investment. 25 homes were delivered in Chris Whitty Place off Bushell Way in Chislehurst and a further 10 apartments were built next to Anerley Town Hall. An additional 25 apartments have also been constructed at Kevin Fenton Mews off Burnt Ash Lane, with more news to come soon about this site.
The council is also exploring further housing sites across the borough as outlined in our housing strategy.
