Residents are invited to come together at Queens Gardens in Bromley town centre and watch the Coronation service, with school children encouraged to design a ‘Kingdom of Bromley’ poster to support the festivities.

The Coronation of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen Consort will take place on Saturday 6 May. Residents are encouraged to come and view the historic occasion on a big screen to be set up in Queens Gardens, with family activities available in the Bromley Park for all to enjoy, such as face painting, balloon modelling, a selfie throne, arts and crafts, and more.

Bromley is also hosting a best decorated shop competition, where residents will be asked to submit their favourite regal shop front display, with the Mayor of Bromley announcing the winner in a visit to the shop at the start of the Coronation bank holiday celebrations. Shops are encouraged to set up their displays following the Easter bank holiday, with residents able to submit their picks from Thursday 13 April at www.bromley.gov.uk/Coronation.

‘The Kingdom of Bromley’ Coronation poster competition involves children across the borough being invited to design an A4 poster themed around the Coronation, which will help to promote either the Queens Gardens Coronation screening or Bromley’s best decorated shop competition. Posters can be submitted at any Bromley library and must be received by Monday 17 April. Find your nearest library  at www.better.org.uk/library/london/bromley.

The winning posters will be chosen by the Mayor of Bromley and announced ahead of the Coronation, to be used to help promote Bromley’s Coronation plans, including by being displayed on Bromley High Street on digital display screens.

Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said: “It is great to see the excitement for the Coronation building up across the borough. While I know many of you will be busy arranging your own festivities, I am sure the Queens Gardens screening will be a great opportunity for others to mark this special occasion and continue our tradition of residents coming together in this park to experience moments of national history. I look forward to seeing all the eye-catching shop displays and colourful posters around the borough ahead of this, which I’m sure will show the best of Bromley’s community spirit once again as we prepare to celebrate.”

Last year for the Platinum Jubilee, Bromley’s best decorated shop competition had over 250 submissions received for 24 shops from across the borough, which saw Designer Drapes in Penge named Bromley’s best decorated Jubilee shop. Bromley libraries also held a #EveryoneaRoyal art challenge for the Platinum Jubilee, with children taking part throughout the borough. It is anticipated that there will be similar interest in the Coronation competitions, with participation being highly encouraged.

Celebrations for the Coronation are expected across the special bank holiday between 6 and 8 May, including over 170 street parties being planned throughout Bromley. Small grants to support community celebrations are being delivered through the community celebration fund with each of the borough’s high streets also being allocated £20,000 to support Coronation decorations, which is being organised by the borough’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs).

Queens Gardens in Bromley Town Centre has hosted a number of gathering of residents across the years to mark moments of national significance, as seen most recently during the Platinum Jubilee celebration and the screening of the funeral of our late Queen Elizabeth II.
