Parenting courses

Our courses aim to build your confidence and help you learn positive parenting styles for all situations.  The courses are based on practical techniques and look to improve communication and build healthy family relationships.   They take place at one of our six Children and Family Centres across the borough and are free to everyone although priority is given to Bromley residents. Courses available

Positive Parenting Skills
A 10 week course for parents and carers of children 3 – 12 years (2 hour sessions) 

This course aims to promote positive parenting strategies and helps to reduce challenging and aggressive behaviour in children. It also explores building your self-esteem and developing support networks. Additionally, the course improves communication, highlights good role modelling, shows the effectiveness of praise and helps you to be confident in setting boundaries.

The Nurturing Programme 
 A 10 week course for parents and carers of children aged 0-16 years (2 hour sessions)

This course aims to help you understand feelings in order to manage behaviour and improve relationships by using positive discipline strategies. It will improve your emotional health and wellbeing by considering your own needs whilst developing self-confidence and self-esteem for a happier family environment.

Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities 
A 13 week course for parents and carers of children/ young people aged 5-18 years (3 hour sessions)

Parents will gain the courage and commitment to develop positive parenting skills, develop close and warm relationships between parents and children, and support the self-discipline and self-esteem of children.  It will develop strategies to manage anger and address issues such as domestic violence, substance misuse, and depression. 

New Forest Parenting Programme (ADHD specific) 
Six week course for parents and carers of children aged 3-11 years (2 hour session)

This course is for parents and carers of children who are displaying some of the symptoms associated with having ADHD, or already have a diagnosis of ADHD.  It explores what ADHD is and supports you and your child in managing the behaviours through parenting, communication, and mother/ father/ carer/ child relationships. 

Bambinos 
A five week course for parents of babies under 1 year (2 hour sessions)

This course aims to support parents in providing their new baby with a positive, healthy start in life.  It encourages communication with young babies, the importance of positive early relationships, how play encourages development in babies under 1 year and tips for providing a healthy and safe environment.  There is also an opportunity for a focused play session in the crèche. 

Improving your Family’s Self Esteem 
A five week course for parents and carers (2 hour sessions)

This course is designed to help you value yourself more and understand how and why children may have low opinions of themselves. By attending the course, you will learn how self-esteem develops, know the impact of a low self-esteem and learn strategies to develop and maintain self-esteem for all the family. 

Understanding Anger in the Family Unit
A five week course for parents and carers of all aged children (2 hour sessions)

This course is designed for families where anger is a feature of home life. The course will help you to understand anger, recognise the triggers, learn to manage it positively and for all members of the family to express anger in appropriate ways to help create a calmer home environment.

Talking Teens
A five week course for parents and cares of teenagers (2 hour sessions)

This course will help enable parents and carers to build on their existing parenting skills whilst learning new ones.  Parents will understand the impact they have on their teenagers and the influence an adolescent brain has on behaviour. The course promotes positive life skills, reduces conflict, improves communication and builds healthy relationships.

Cygnet
A six week course for parents and carers of children with Autism (3 hour sessions)

Friendly group sessions to help parents and carers understand Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and the way their child sees the world. Sessions will help parents and carers understand their child’s behaviour, examine autism diagnosis, sensory issues and communication.  Parents will learn strategies to support behaviour in their children whilst sharing their parenting experiences with other parents.

Once we have received your referral we will contact you to make sure you are placed on the course that best suits your needs.  Our courses are popular so you may be put on a waiting list, if this happens, we will contact you as soon as a place becomes available.
