Crystal Palace Park Community Fund results in Christmas carol

A Christmas carol has been sung for the first time at Crystal Palace, with the community coming together to support the park and the song.

The performance of “Oh Santa, I just wanna see ya” in the National Sports Centre is an unintended Christmas bonus resulting from community interest in the recently launched Community Project Fund. The fund aims to issue grants of up to £20K to local community groups who have aspirations to deliver specific projects and activities.

The song was written by two local talented young musicians three years ago. Tiyane and Kaydian, were aged just 9 and 7 respectively at the time and this year recorded the video with over 80 members from the Crystal Palace and Sydenham communities, produced by locally based professional composer Pete M Wyer.

Pete said, “We think Christmas is a time for kindness, sharing and gratitude. This little video is made in that spirit, it features a song by Tiyane and Kaydian, who were aged 9 and 7 when it was written, singing with the local community. It’s free: no-one’s selling anything or trying to become famous - we hope you enjoy it in the festive spirit in which it's intended and that you’ll feel free to share it with friends, to wish them a Happy Christmas too.”

Councillor Stephen Carr, Leader of Bromley Council said, “We were pleased to be able to support this project and we have been encouraged by the numbers of people who have shown interest in the community project fund. This is an inspiring example of what happens when like-minded people come together. This was not about money and everyone gave their time for free, with no money being paid to anyone for anything. If your group is thinking about a project which could benefit the park, contact us and apply to the community project fund.”

The news follows the awarding of £36,000 of community funding earlier this month from the £240,000 Community Fund. The fund is part of a wider initiative which is seeing £2.4 million being invested into Crystal Palace Park by the council and the Mayor of London.

The deadline for the third round of community grant funding applications is January 22, 2016 and round four ends on Friday 8 April 2016.
