Bromley Foster Carers were recognised for the incredible work they do at a special awards event held at the Bromley Court Hotel this summer.

Nine carers received certificates and specialist awards after being nominated by council staff and partners, as well as the young people themselves. An incredible thirty-three carers received awards for 10 plus years, 15 plus years and one for 24 years’ service to fostering.

There are around 310 children looked after in the borough at any one time and they rely on their foster family to help them face the day-to-day challenges of life. Bromley Council’s Looked After Children team work closely with carers providing them with training and support so they have the skills they need for the important task of helping these children get on with their lives when they cannot continue to be cared for by their birth parents. This can be for many different reasons and for short or longer periods of time, depending on the circumstances.

Councillor Peter Fortune, Executive Member for Children, Education and Families said: “We really value our foster carers as they do such a valuable job in looking after and supporting young people who, for a variety of reasons, are not able to be cared for by their own parents. I know that our foster carers find their role extremely rewarding and my colleague councillors and I take a keen interest as ‘corporate parents’ in how ‘our’ children are doing. We want them to be the very best they can and our dedicated foster carers play a pivotal role in achieving this.”

Foster carers come from all walks of life and all types of family settings. Bromley Council is always looking for caring people who want to make a difference to a young person’s life. There are many types of caring from full time to short term and respite for all ages of children up to 18 years and beyond for those with a disability. The rewards are positive and full training is given, with added support as required. Bromley’s friendly Fostering Team is always happy to chat with anyone who thinks they might have the right skills to join the growing team of Bromley foster carers. If that sounds like you, call for a chat at any time during office hours Monday to Friday on 020 8461 7034 and attend one or our welcome events to find our more. www.bromley.gov.uk/fostering
