Preferred school places outcomes confirms Bromley top performance
Published Wednesday, 4 March 2020
The vast majority of Bromley school children will again be going to the secondary school of their choice latest figures just released show.
The statistics show that Bromley continues to be one of London’s top performing boroughs at ensuring pupils get their preferred school place.
90% of Bromley’s resident school children will be attending one of their top 3 choices of school, with 73% offered their first preference. This compares with the London average of just 68% of children receiving their first preference, with Bromley one of the 6 top performing boroughs in London.
Councillor Peter Fortune, Deputy Leader, Executive Councillor for Children and Families said, “We are performing highly in this area year on year, despite increasing numbers of children. Going to a school that you wanted to go to helps make sure that children get a confident start in the crucial period of secondary school. We are ambitious for children and schooling is a key part of this. We are working very hard behind the scenes with schools to make sure there are as many spaces as possible for our children and I am very pleased by this latest news.”
Councillor Fortune added, “We know that this is inevitably an uncertain period for parents and children alike, particularly for the very small numbers of children who did not receive one of their preferred choices. Our admissions team remain on hand to help and support parents with any queries they may have.”
Locally, Bromley’s performance of 73% of school children receiving their first choice school is better than virtually all neighbouring boroughs, including Greenwich (68%), Southwark (65%), Croydon (64%), Lewisham (62%) and Lambeth (60%), with the percentage of first choice preferences shown in brackets.
Bromley resident parents were mailed by first class post their offer of a single school place on 2 March 2020. A notification of offer by email was sent to online applicants from 5.30pm.
The closing date for applications for secondary school places for entry in September 2020 was 31 October 2019, with Monday 2 March 2020 being the national offer day.
