Parents of babies born in Bromley during lockdown are reminded to register the birth

Parents of babies born during the Covid-19 emergency are now being urged to book an appointment as soon as possible to register the birth

Bromley Council re-opened for birth registrations at the end of June, after creating a fully risk assessed COVID-secure process for parents of newborns to register their child’s birth safely with the Register Office. Parents should book their appointment by phone by calling 0300 303 8667 with registrations taking place from Monday to Friday (8.30am - 5pm). There is a particular emphasis on births from February and March of this year.

Birth registrations are a legal requirement but it was not possible to continue this face-to-face service during lockdown, creating a backlog of some 1,200 registrations, but good progress has been made over the past few weeks and Registrars hope to clear the backlog during August. Parents are being asked to book an appointment as soon as possible to ensure all affected registrations are completed by the end of August.

Councillor Graham Arthur, Executive Member for Resources, Commissioning and Contract Management said: “Birth registrations are a legal requirement and an important, poignant step in bringing a new child into the world. Registering your baby’s birth is essential to provide your child with legal recognition of their identity.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions in many ways, but as we move step-by-step through the challenging circumstances, we encourage parents of recently born babies to book their birth registration appointment as soon as possible now. Working through the registrations which we were not able to complete due to the lockdown has been progressing well, but we urge parents that need to, to get in touch with our Register Office and book their place and help us further clear the backlog.”

Birth registrations are conducted by appointment only. Call the Register Office on 0300 303 8667, the service is open from Monday to Friday (8.30am –5pm).
