£1 million for independent pubs, including sports and social clubs

Applications for grant funding from independent pubs are already being received and new applications are also being encouraged for the ring-fenced support funding.

The discretionary grant scheme also applies to sports and social clubs and other independent bars too, with the funding recognising that these local businesses have been amongst the most severely impacted and have had access to limited support. Grants range from £3000 for the smallest premises, up to £10,500 for larger premises, with application details available at www.bromley.gov.uk/independentpubgrant.

Councillor Peter Fortune, Deputy Leader of Bromley Council said, “We well recognise the extremely difficult conditions that our local hospitality sector has faced. This grant funding shows support for these businesses which also act in many ways as community hubs. We have kept the application process to a minimum to make this as efficient as we can. Hopefully these businesses will soon be able to re-open again, when better times are confirmed, with this grant scheme very much focussed on that.”

Jamie and Carole Muir have been the managing The Oak in Widmore Road, Bickley for 16 years and say they have never known a more difficult period for the industry.  Carole said, “We run a safe and family-friendly pub which is an important part of the local community.  We’re really frightened that without help we’ll not be able to survive the pandemic.”  Jamie continued, “That’s why we are so grateful to the council for stepping in to support us at this difficult time.  It’s a great boost for the community and to local businesses and we are so thankful they have listened to our concerns.  We’d love to buy them a pint when we reopen!”

The confirmation of these new ring fenced monies also follows proactive work to distribute the Christmas support payment to wet led pubs.

Interested businesses wanting to know when other business grant schemes become available are advised to subscribe to the business newsletter www.bromley.gov.uk/business where details of new grants will be announced.
