We are consulting on the possible introduction of a School Street in Westgate Road, near to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School.

Letters have been sent to selected residents within close proximity to the proposed area asking them to complete an online survey.

School Streets have been widely introduced in other London boroughs where they have helped to:

  • Reduce congestion outside schools during the morning and afternoon when parents drop and pick up children. Parents will no longer be able to drive to the school gates.
  • Encourage parents to walk to school to avoid congestion and not being able to find parking close to the school.
  • Help reduce pollution and improve air quality in the vicinity because of reduced congestion.

The proposals would involve the restriction of motor vehicles entering the school street during 8:25 to 8:55am in the morning and 15:05 to 15:35pm in the afternoon. These hours may be changed subject to your views and requirements of the school. The entrance to the restricted area would be at the junction of Westgate Road with Foxgrove Road and on the other end of Westgate Road towards Beckenham Place Park.

These restrictions will not apply to residents within this part of Westgate Road and would only apply during term times and not at the weekends or during school holidays. All residents within the School Street will be issued with permits to allow them to enter and exit during the prescribed hours and these will be free.

Enforcement initially would be by means of removable barriers manned by marshals at either end. We are currently looking into barriers that can recognise number plates and open and close automatically as an option for the future.
