Representatives from local businesses visited Darrick Wood Secondary School this summer to encourage year 10 students to think about how to prepare for their futures after leaving school.
At the invitation of the Education Business Partnership (EBP), which is part of Bromley’s Youth Support Programme, the business ambassadors from a range of business, industry and public sector organisations attended the school’s employability day to engage with the young people and encourage the soon-to-be year 11s to focus on their future career prospects, employability skills and boost their motivation.
Bromley EBP signposts and supports young people to gain new skills and experiences through real-life contact with professionals from businesses and the local community. This enables young people to understand and be better prepared for their future. Students benefitted from advice on different paths they could pursue and also from help to build an attractive CV.
Councillor Peter Fortune Executive Member for Children, Education and Families said: “I am pleased to see different people and organisations from the community coming together to inspire young people. We are proud to contribute towards helping young people discover the variety of opportunities available to them when they leave school. The workshops that took place provided invaluable lessons for these young people to take with them into their futures, giving them the best foundation for the world of work. The guidance and direction of our EBP and the Youth Support Programme give crucial support to Bromley’s young people helping them reach their full potential”.
The thirteen business ambassadors participated in activities with the year 10 students encouraging them to consider the skills needed to be an attractive candidate. These included a psychometric test which provided the young people with insight into their mental and behavioural styles, designed to measure their suitability for roles based on personality characteristics. The students also engaged in an ‘About me’ activity, outlining their personal achievements and using them to create and build an attractive CV. Interview training and advice on future career options by a London South East Colleges representative were also on offer.
