Orpington businesses have once again demonstrated their commitment to the town centre, voting overwhelmingly in favour of a third term for the Orpington 1st Business Improvement District (BID).

A not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, Orpington 1st is made up of approximately 325 businesses based on and around the high street. Its role is to carry out a range of additional projects to improve the town centre, including a comprehensive events and marketing campaign, environmental programme, business support, and advocacy.

The result of the postal ballot, declared on Friday, was a resounding YES to the BID’s continuation, with 87 percent voting in favour by rateable value and 89 percent in favour by number, meaning a third term will now run from 2023 to 2028.

Chairman of Orpington BID Board, Martin Price, said: “On behalf of the BID Board I would like to thank the business community here in Orpington for their ongoing support. Together, we have achieved a great deal over the last decade, and together we’ll keep striving to make Orpington a better place to live, work, and visit.”

Chris Travers, Orpington 1st Executive Director, said: “We’re delighted that the BID has received such a strong endorsement from a business community which continues to believe, and invest, in Orpington town centre. The BID provides a strong collective voice which will be vital as we navigate the challenges ahead and shape our town’s future. I look forward to continuing our work on behalf of all our members to ensure Orpington remains better for business.”

Orpington 1st was the first BID established in the borough in 2013, and has since been followed by Bromley town, Beckenham, and Penge.

Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing said: “Warmest congratulations to Orpington 1st whose contribution to Orpington has been underlined by achieving support for a third term.  We’re looking forward to continuing to work in partnership with Orpington 1st and welcome the additional investment that is directly generated for this important town.
