A Notice of Election has been published in Bromley and Bexley boroughs today (19 March), with voters set to go to the polls as part of the Greater London Authority elections.

The election for the Mayor of London and for Greater London Assembly members will take place on Thursday 2 May. As well as voting for the Mayor, residents will vote for London-wide assembly members and for constituency assembly members, with the London Boroughs of Bromley and Bexley forming one constituency for this election.

To take part in these elections, residents must be registered to vote by Tuesday 16 April, with voter ID also being required at the polling stations following national legislation introduced last year.

There are various forms of valid photo ID, including passport, driver’s licence, blue badge, 60+ oyster card, the freedom pass and many more. While expired IDs are also accepted as long as there is a likeness, an alternative is available to any residents without valid ID. Residents can apply for this alternative, a Voter Authority Certificate, up to 5pm on Wednesday 24 April, which will also be valid for subsequent elections including the next general election, with more information online.

Voters can also apply for a new or amended postal vote up until 5pm on Wednesday 17 April. Further changes to rules and provisions have also been introduced for this election, including improving accessibility of polling stations.

As well as the London-wide elections, residents may also be able to vote for a local councillor if a by-election is held in their ward. A by-election is expected in the Shortlands and Park Langley Ward, following the resignation of Councillor Aisha Cuthbert, with more details about this to follow.

After polls close on Thursday 2 May, procedures start for counting the votes across London, with results for the elections expected to be announced over the weekend. Over 1,000 roles are needed to complete the election work in Bromley alone.
