Bromley’s children looked after (CLA) and care leavers cut the ribbon at the grand opening of ‘Our House’, a newly refurbished space dedicated to delivering learning, support, and social activities

The new space provided a blank canvas in a house previously used as offices, but no longer needed for this purpose. Bromley’s young people supported the redecorations with painting, cleaning, and putting furniture together. Named ‘Our House’ by the young people with a plaque to that effect on the front, it will now provide a safe, homely space that Bromley’s young people have played a part in creating which will be used to support them and other young people into the future.

Councillor Kate Lymer, Executive Councillor for Children, Education and Families said, “Our House is an exciting initiative that has turned a disused house into a multifunctional space where our young people can develop life and social skills together and continue their work with the Bromley team in a more welcoming and homely environment. Our House is not only a practical tool where our young people can experience hands-on learning as they prepare for independent living, but also provides a comfortable space where they will feel confident to raise a range of topics to enable them to develop emotionally.”

Bromley’s CLA and care leavers staff regularly meet with young people to develop life skills as they prepare for adulthood, and they will now be able to host a series of group work sessions that were previously being delivered online. Plans for the future of Our House already include a regular lunch club, where young people can meet, cook, eat, and socialise, and drop-in sessions for education, training, employment support, and learning sessions for healthy living.
