Adding father's details

If the natural parents were not married to or in a civil partnership with each other at the time of the birth, and the father did not attend with the mother to register the baby, it is possible to re-register the birth to include the father's details in the register entry. A form is available from the register office or can be downloaded from GOV.UK, which must be completed by both parents and submitted to the office for checking, together with any supporting documents. An appointment will be made for the re-registration to take place. The easiest way for the birth to be re-registered is for both parents to attend the register office together. If this is not possible, please contact us for further information.

Showing the parents as married or in a civil partnership

If the natural parents have married or entered into a civil partnership with each other since the birth was registered, the birth should be re-registered to accurately record the legal status of the child. A form is available from the register office or can be downloaded from GOV.UK, which must be signed by both parents and submitted to the office for checking, together with any supporting documents. An appointment will be made for the re-registration to take place. Either parent can attend the register office.

Cost

Copies of the full birth certificate showing the new details are available at a cost of £11 each at the time of re-registration. Payment by debit or credit card only.

If it is more convenient, the re-registration can be made at another register office. These details will then be forwarded to us. We will re-register the birth and new certificates can be ordered from this office online. This process is called re-registering a birth by declaration.
