Full elections in the London Borough of Bromley are held in all wards every four years in May. The last local elections took place on Thursday 5 May 2022. The next local elections are due to be held on 7 May 2026.

Who can be a candidate?

Please note that these qualifications may be amended as part of the Elections Act 2022.

You can be a candidate if you are:

  • over 18 on the day of nomination and
  •  are a British, qualifying Commonwealth or European Union citizen and
  • are registered to vote (and will continue to be) in the borough from the day of nomination or
  • have lived, worked, or occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the borough during the whole of the 12 months before the day of nomination and on the day of election.

You cannot be a candidate if you do not meet the criteria above or are disqualified because:

  •  you work for Bromley Council or hold a politically restricted post with another local authority

There are various other disqualifications relating to criminal convictions and bankruptcy. We always recommend that if you are unsure that you take your own legal advice.

How do I become nominated?

Most candidates are nominated through a political party. However, an individual can stand as an Independent candidate in their own right. Before anyone can be accepted as a candidate they need to complete a nomination paper and get ten people who are registered to vote in the ward in which they wish to stand as a candidate to sign to subscribe their nomination. When elected, councillors have to agree to follow a code of conduct.
