Who can be a candidate?
In order to stand as a candidate, there a number of qualifications that you must meet relating to:
- your age
- your nationality
- your qualifying address
You cannot be a candidate if you do not meet the criteria or are disqualified because:
- you work for Bromley Council
- or you hold a politically restricted post with another local authority of body
- there are various other disqualifications relating to criminal convictions and bankruptcy.
More information can be found on the Electoral Commission website.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you are qualified to stand and are not subject to any disqualifications. Neither the Returning Officer nor the Electoral Commission can confirm this to you. If you are in doubt about your eligibility you should seek legal advice.
How do I become nominated?
Most candidates are nominated through a political party. However, an individual can stand as an Independent candidate in their own right. Before anyone can be accepted as a candidate they need to complete a nomination paper and get the relevant number of people who are registered to vote in the ward in which they wish to stand as a candidate to sign to subscribe their nomination. When elected, councillors have to agree to follow a code of conduct.
