Consultation about a renewal of the existing Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for dog controls, in support of responsible dog ownership, is underway.

The 4 week consultation period will officially close on Monday 27 July and residents, including parks visitors and others are being encouraged to respond to the online consultation.

The existing Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for dog controls has successfully been in place for 3 years and expires later this year, with proposals to renew the Order for a further 3 years, in line legislation requirements now subject to consultation.

It is proposed that the existing dog controls across the borough including forbidding dog fouling and excluding dogs from play parks as well as requiring dogs to be on leads will all continue. As part of the proposals, the maximum number of dogs able to be walked together by anyone person will continue to be four. It is proposed the new order will also include excluding dogs from cemeteries, which if accepted would mean that the rule would also be reflected in the cemetery rules and regulations. Currently, dogs are allowed on leads in cemeteries.

Councillor Angela Page, Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Enforcement said, “The council is proposing that the existing dog controls, which have been in place for the last 3 years, remain in place. These controls have worked well but it is right we reflect if we have the right level of controls. Feedback is important and we encourage dog owners, families and other residents to respond to the consultation, including to support the proposals.”

The current Dog Control PSPO helps promote responsible dog ownership while supporting dog safety and public safety across the borough. It also plays an important role in setting clear expectations for dog owners in public spaces, helping to ensure that streets, parks and open spaces remain safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone - including dog owners, families and other residents.
