Young people from across the borough met employers, training providers and education partners at the third annual Aspire, Inspire, Motivate (AIM) Job Fair in Orpington.
Organised by the Living in Care Council (LinCC), the event took place at Crofton Halls, Orpington, and brought together 35 businesses and organisations to support young people looking at their next steps.
Councillor Jonathan Andrews, Executive Councillor for Children, Education, and Families said, “The AIM Job Fair is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when employers, education providers and local services come together to support young people.
“I was delighted to attend, to speak with young people and employers alike, and it was great to see so many young people speaking with employers, asking questions and finding out more about the opportunities available to them. Events like this can make a real difference. They help young people build confidence, make new contacts and take positive steps towards work, training or further education.
"I would like to thank all the businesses and organisations who gave their time, donated prizes and helped make the day such a success. Any business interested in supporting future events or creating opportunities for local young people is encouraged to get in touch with us.”
A total of 59 young people attended the event, where they were able to speak directly with employers and find out more about jobs, training, apprenticeships and further education.
Organisations taking part included Royal Mail, the Royal Air Force, Currys, the Department for Work and Pensions, Mace Construction and London South East Colleges, alongside many other local and national partners.
Young people were encouraged to speak with at least six different employers during the day. As a direct result of conversations at the event, two young people left with potential job opportunities.
A key part of the day was a talk from King Simpson, a care-experienced guest speaker, who shared his personal story with attendees. He also led a workshop based on his short film (Home), which helped start an open and lively discussion with young people at the event.
The AIM Job Fair is now in its third year and continues to support young people by giving them the chance to meet employers face to face and learn more about local routes into work, training and education.
