Plaistow Lane is being closed to traffic following the discovery of a void near to the junction with Plaistow Green roundabout, with investigation work starting tomorrow, Tuesday 14 July.

The discovery of a hole in the road, near the bus stop and shopping parade prompted the closure for safety reasons. The entire road is now being closed, which follows a partial closure last week of one side of the road only, which has proved dangerous as some motorists have disregarded the warning signs. The discovery of the hole followed a repair of a small ‘dip’ in the road, with the road ‘dip’ subsiding further in the days after the repair.

Councillor Simon Fawthrop, Executive Councillor for Transport and Highways said, “We need to understand why this void has occurred which will mean digging up the road to find out. The road is now closed for safety reasons. I would like to thank local residents, motorists and businesses for their understanding and patience, whilst we urgently investigate what’s going on. I would encourage motorists not to ignore the road signs, even though it might look like there is nothing wrong. We do not know how extensive the void is under the road surface and appreciate it is frustrating for all concerned, but we really do have to put safety first.”

Traffic diversions are in place, with buses also needing to be diverted as a result of the road closure.

It is hoped that the road can be repaired and reopened within a matter of days. However, this will depend on the findings of the investigation work. If no utility infrastructure is found to be affected, repairs may be completed quickly. If the void is found to be associated with underground utility infrastructure, further investigation and repair work by the relevant utility company may then be required.
