A fly-tipping incident has resulted in a successful prosecution, underlining the council's ongoing commitment to tackle the illegal dumping of waste.
The incident, captured on CCTV in October 2025, involved large items of furniture being unloaded from a rented van and left behind recycling banks in Plaistow Lane, Bromley near Sundridge Park train station. The recycling banks were in place to help residents recycle paper, glass bottles and jars, and clothing items, with the dumped furniture left near the ‘no fly-tipping’ sign which warned offenders would be prosecuted.
Following an investigation, the hirer of the van involved was identified and issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice for the illegal depositing of waste contrary to Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
After the notice remained unpaid, despite an extension of time to being granted, prosecution followed. Brendan Nicholas Daley, of Glenure Road, Eltham, appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court on 14 July 2026, where he pleaded guilty to the offence. Mr Daley was ordered to pay a fine of £825, a victim surcharge of £330 and prosecution costs of £400, totalling £1,555.
A council spokesperson said, "Prosecution remains a last resort, but it is simply not acceptable to dump furniture or other items at a recycling bank or anywhere else. Not only is it unsightly and can be dangerous, but it also deters others using the banks for their recycling. Residents are reminded that they can take unwanted items to the council’s Reuse and Recycling Centre in Beckenham, with the council also providing a collection service for those who prefer the convenience of direct collections. Businesses are also reminded that information about responsible disposal of waste is available on the council website.”
Residents are reminded that bulky household items can be disposed of at the Churchfields Road Reuse and Recycling Centre by booking an appointment or by using the weekend Reuse and Recycling Centre on Baths Road. Alternatively, residents can book an appointment for the council to collect items directly.
