A new Book Nook at Bromley Civic Centre will give children and families a welcoming place to read together while attending appointments.

The council successfully applied to The Reading Agency for the Book Nook, which includes books and resources worth £1,000.

It is one of 200 Raising Readers Book Nooks being created across the country to mark the two-hundredth anniversary of publisher Hachette UK.

Councillor Jonathan Andrews, Executive Councillor for Children, Education, and Families said, “Reading together can not only be fun and enjoyable, but also helps children learn, build confidence and connect with their families. This new Book Nook will create a warm and welcoming space where children can enjoy a book during their visit to the Civic Centre.

“We hope it will also encourage more families to explore their local libraries and discover the wide range of books, activities and support on offer.”

The new Book Nook will be placed in the family room at Bromley Civic Centre. Children and young people will be able to enjoy books with their parents and carers while they wait for appointments.

The space will offer families a calm and welcoming environment. It will also help children build a positive relationship with books and encourage more families to discover the reading activities and services available through Bromley libraries.

Families inspired to continue reading together can also take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to enjoy books, discover new stories and keep reading during the summer holidays. Families can find out more online or visit their local library to get involved.

Other Book Nooks are available at Children and Family Centres across the borough, giving more families accessible spaces in which to read and share stories.
