Bromley residents are being encouraged to take a simple but important step for their health by getting their blood pressure and pulse checked during Know Your Numbers Week.
The council will support Know Your Numbers Week (7-11 September), led by Blood Pressure UK, with three community events in Mottingham, Bromley and Penge.
Residents can drop in at the following locations, no booking required:
- Monday 7 September, 10am to 2pm - Cranley Parade, Beaconsfield Road, Mottingham, SE9 4DZ
- Thursday 10 September, 10am to 2pm - Bromley Football Club, The CopperJax Community Stadium, Hayes Lane, Bromley, BR2 9EF
- Friday 11 September, 9am to 3pm - Empire Square, Penge High Street, SE20 7EX
High blood pressure often has no clear symptoms. This means that someone can have it without knowing. Left untreated, it can increase the risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
A blood pressure check is quick and simple. Knowing the result can help people understand their health and act early if they need to.
Dr Nada Lemic, Director of Public Health at Bromley Council said, “It is easy to put our health to one side when life is busy, but a simple blood pressure check could be one of the most important things you do this year.
“Knowing your numbers gives you the chance to act early and make changes that can protect your heart and help you stay well for longer. Small steps, such as moving more, eating well or getting the right advice, can add up to a real difference.
“I encourage residents to visit one of our community events. Taking a few minutes to check your blood pressure today could inspire a healthier future for you and the people you care about.”
Residents who cannot attend an event can ask their local community pharmacy or GP practice about blood pressure checks. Information is also available on the NHS website for people who want to monitor their blood pressure at home.
There are many ways to look after your heart and improve general health. These can include being active, eating a balanced diet, keeping a healthy weight, stopping smoking and drinking less alcohol. The right steps will be different for each person, and support is available.
