As the festive season gets into full swing, Bromley Council and the police are reminding residents of the pitfalls of using un-booked minicabs.

They are giving advice on how safely to get a taxi (black cab) or mini cab (private hire).

The most important piece of advice is always to pre-book your journey where possible.

Pre-booking means there is a record of the journey, the driver, and the vehicle used, so in the event of any problems, the driver and vehicle can be traced.

When using a minicab remember:

  • Always book your journey through a licensed minicab operator, via a booking app, phone, or email - or in person at the minicab office.
  • You should receive confirmation with vehicle details.
  • Private hire operators will have a record of the journey, the driver and the vehicle used.

When using a black cab, remember:

  • Black cabs (taxis) are different to minicabs, they can be hailed on the street or at any taxi rank.
  • Black cabs do not need to be pre-booked, but can be pre-booked if you wish via an app, phone or online.
  • All black cabs are 100 per cent wheelchair accessible.

Every day across Bromley, many taxi and minicab journeys are taken, the vast majority without incident. However, if you experience any poor driving or behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable, you can report it by dialling 101, or if it is an emergency, calling 999. All reports will be taken seriously and will be investigated.

Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Safety, Councillor Angela Page said: “We want residents to have an enjoyable and safe festive season, so plan where you can, booking taxis before travelling and if you intend to hail a cab in the street make sure it is a ‘black cab’ which will be fully licensed for this purpose. Also, do remember to report anything that makes you feel uncomfortable as this will help make travelling around more pleasant and safer for everyone.”
