Following demolition of a historic building dating from World War Two at Biggin Hill Airport, the council is involved in court proceedings with respect to the actions of Biggin Hill Airport Limited.

The heritage building, the Dispersal Hut, formed part of the historic airfield used by heroic pilots during the Battle of Britain to defend the country. The building was demolished during Armistice Week in November, ahead of the eightieth anniversary of VE Day this year.

While the details of this case are confidential and legally privileged, the council in its position as landlord confirms that it took decisive action to prevent the export of some remaining parts of the building to the USA following its demolition. This demolition is a serious breach of Biggin Hill Airport Limited’s lease.

A council spokesperson said: “The council took legal action following the demolition of a building of historic importance by our tenant. The airport is home to invaluable heritage connected to the Battle of Britain. When it quickly became clear that the historic building was no longer in situ and parts were being prepared for export to the USA, the council had to act quickly to protect the position.”

Due to legal proceedings being ongoing, further details cannot be shared.
