Residents are invited to find out more about plans to refurbish the Crofton Roman Villa site, with feedback sought ahead of proposed works set to commence towards the end of 2025.

A new roof, accessible toilets and improved signage are amongst improvements planned for the site. New interactive educational panels are also intended for the site.

Interested residents can find out more about proposals at the temporary Orpington Library site in The Walnuts Shopping Centre on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 11 June – 9:30am to 5:30pm
  • Thursday 12 June  – 4pm to 6pm
  • Saturday 14 June – 10am to 12pm

Members of the project team will be available to provide further details of the proposed design, with the plans having been carefully considered with earlier resident input and involvement from various stakeholder groups. Feedback to proposals is also being welcomed during the session, or through the Bromley Council website.

Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, said: “This site is a proud and important element of the borough’s heritage, offering residents a close insight into the area's roman past. Please do come to find out more and provide your input to our planned works to further enhance this site, which has such great historical and educational significance.”

Crofton Roman Villa is the only Roman villa open to the public in Greater London and was the centre of a large farming estate, which was inhabited from about 140 to 400 AD. Today the remains of 10 rooms are protected inside a public viewing building, which include tessellated tiled floors and the ancient under-floor heating system, known as a hypocaust.

Works are set to commence towards to the end of the year to reopen in 2026, pending final confirmation of the plans, with grant funding sought to support some elements of the works.

Ahead of the works, school bookings are available during June and July this summer.
