Croydon Road, Penge, will be closed to traffic on Thursday evening, 12 June between Samos Road and Weighton Road, as part of work to demolish a building with the road re-opening on Saturday evening.
Croydon Road will be closed from Thursday 8pm to Saturday evening at 6pm. The closure of Croydon Road, with diversions in place, including for buses, is needed to allow the area to be prepared for the emergency demolition to start next week, with initial hoarding work being undertaken to ensure the wider area remains as safe as possible during the demolition work.
The TT pharmacy in Croydon Road is likely to be closed during the road closure period, with residents advised to seek alternative pharmacies and details of pharmacy locations available on the NHS website.
It is anticipated that Croydon Road will partially reopen on Saturday evening, from 8pm, with temporary traffic lights then controlling traffic for the remainder of the demolition work, with the width of the road reduced given the scale of the hoarding work. A temporary crossing facility will also be in place to help pedestrians cross the road.
Three local bus stops will be closed for the duration of the entire demolition work, with Tremaine Road at the junction of Croydon Road also closed for the duration of the demolition work, which could take around three weeks.
The news follows confirmation last year that the structure of the former Mitre public house had become unstable during building work, prompting the emergency evacuation of local residents at that time. The latest expert monitoring of the adjacent buildings, which form part of the block, and which have since being supported with scaffolding, show further cracking and have become unstable, with the three buildings becoming dangerous. The council is therefore taking action to demolish the buildings to ensure public safety.
A Bromley Council spokesperson said, “This demolition work is an absolute last resort, with our structural engineers advising that the building has become even more unstable and is now dangerous. The road is closed to allow for preparation work, with a hoarding being erected around the building, with demolition work then getting underway. Croydon Road will partially re-open once the hoarding is constructed and only fully re-open once the demolition work is complete. We apologise for any inconvenience, with this work unavoidable from a safety perspective.”
