In support of the nation’s armed forces, a flag raising ceremony was held in Bromley Town Centre today (Thursday 26 June) in the lead up to Armed Forces Day.
Proceedings for the ceremony, which takes place each year in the borough, were led by the Mayor of Bromley and saw guests come together at the Bromley War Memorial on Martins Hill near Bromley Parish Church, in tribute to those who have served in the armed forces. A two-minute silence was held during the ceremony, with wreaths also laid at the war memorial.
A council spokesperson said: “We continue to both celebrate and show our thanks for those who serve the nation across every wing of our armed forces. Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to reflect on the many personal sacrifices that have been made by our armed forces community, it is also an occasion to recognise, and to show our utmost respect and appreciation for, our armed forces community locally and across the nation - including those currently serving, veterans, reservists, cadets and their families and others who support them.”
The ceremony took place during Armed Forces Week, which follows earlier celebrations, including for Reserves Day, with related events taking place this week across the borough.
Bromley has the largest percentage of military veterans of all the London boroughs, with 2.5 per cent of residents having served in the armed forces. The borough also has dedicated Army Cadet, Air Training and Sea Cadet Corps providing life skills, training and friendship for younger members of the community across the borough.
