Croydon Road, Penge, will be closed to traffic on Thursday evening, 24 July.
Croydon Road, Penge will be closed between Samos Road and Weighton Road, as part of work to complete the partial demolition of a building with the road re-opening on Friday evening.
Croydon Road will be closed from Thursday 9pm to Friday evening at 9pm. The closure of Croydon Road, with diversions in place, including for buses, is needed to allow the hoarding for the emergency demolition to be taken off the road and remodelled around the affected building only. The road and pavement will then be able to fully re-open along with local bus stops.
A reduced and remodelled hoarding will remain around the affected building(s) which will allow the building owners to carry out works in the future given that the council’s partial demolition work was carried solely in support of public safety.
A Bromley Council spokesperson said, “This safety related demolition work has been an absolute last resort, given the advice of our structural engineers about the building becoming more unstable. We know this has been an immensely difficult time for residents and affected businesses who we have sought to support and we are grateful for their understanding. It is now for the building owners again to take forward and resolve the remaining issues.”
The emergency demolition for safety reasons followed confirmation that the structure of the former Mitre public house had become unstable during building work, prompting the emergency evacuation of local residents at that time.
The council’s expert monitoring of the adjacent buildings, which form part of the block, and which have since being supported with scaffolding, showed that the buildings were dangerous. The decision to partially demolish the buildings for safety reasons was therefore taken, with the council now looking to recover its costs.
