Bromley Trading Standards is reminding residents to stay alert to product safety recalls, with advice to regularly check for recall notices and to take immediate action if a product is affected.
This warning follows an incident where a tumble dryer caught fire, causing property damage. The product had been subject to a manufacturer recall due to a fault that posed a serious risk of fire and injury. The London Fire Brigade has published an article with advice on electrical items and fire safety at home.
While manufacturers may make contact directly if a product is affected, this isn't always guaranteed. Residents are therefore urged to be proactive — complete warranty forms for newly purchased items and check recall notices regularly.
Product recall notices are issued when a fault is identified that could endanger users. These faults can range from electrical hazards to choking risks in children's toys. If you own a product that is subject to a recall:
- Stop using it immediately
- Follow the recall instructions — this may include returning the item, getting a refund, or receiving a free repair
- Contact the retailer or manufacturer
- Report the issue to Citizens Advice for help and advice on 0808 223 1133
To find out what products are currently affected by a recall notice:
- Check the manufacturer's website or social media
- Check official websites — please refer to the 'Stay informed' section
- Look out for emails or letters from retailers
Whatever the product, the Trading Standards advice is clear: stay informed and act quickly to protect yourself and others.
