The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Jonathan Andrews, has visited St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance in Biggin Hill to share a message of reflection as the borough comes together for Remembrance.

The Mayor’s Remembrance message reflects on the sacrifices of those who have served and died for our nation, including locally, with Deputy Lieutenant Deirdre Barr joining the Mayor to reflect and remember at the Chapel and across local parishes in Cudham and Downe.

Remembrance this year follows the eightieth anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day earlier in 2025, which collectively marked the end of the Second World War. This year also saw the eighty-fifth anniversary of the Battle of Britain - the history of which is particularly tied to the borough, with Sir Winston Churchill himself having recognised Biggin Hill as the nation’s “strongest link” in the battle, and the RAF Chapel of Remembrance in Biggin Hill having been built to commemorate the 454 allied aircrew who were killed during the Second World War.

Councillor Jonathan Andrews, the Mayor of Bromley, said: “Remembrance is particularly poignant this year given the eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, which makes it all the more important that we honour the sacrifices of those who fought, and in a great many cases died, for us all. I also want to offer my sincere thanks to our poppy vendors across the borough, who freely and tirelessly give their time, efforts and commitment every year to raise important charitable funds for our brave servicemen and women, and veterans, of today.

“Given the pivotal role that Biggin Hill played in the Battle of Britain, I found it incredibly moving to visit the Chapel of Remembrance, and local churches across Downe and Cudham, to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many - including of residents in and around Biggin Hill and the surrounding parishes who sadly lost their lives from attacks targeting the airfield, and of course, of those serving from the airfield itself. We will remember them.”

Bromley has more veterans than any other London Borough and the council signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2023 to renew its commitment to supporting the armed forces community, with this work ongoing. Further information about the armed forces community in Bromley, including support that is available, is found at www.bromley.gov.uk/ArmedForces.
