Work to replace the much loved bridge across the lake in Kelsey Park is now underway, including some of the preparation work in the park as well.
The new Kelsey Park bridge is being constructed off site, with the final installation work being completed by Spring 2026 and initial preparation work also taking place in the park. Tree and coppicing work has already been undertaken along with the key survey work ahead of the installation of the heavy lifting equipment which will be needed in the New Year.
Land and Water, the contractor who successfully completed desilting work in March this year, has been appointed to take forward the work, with the £567k construction project work carefully planned and phased to ensure minimal disruption to park visitors. The confirmation of the bridge renewal work means that over £2.5 million will have been invested in the park in the last 2 years, over and above routine maintenance, demonstrating the council’s ongoing commitment to invest in parks in the borough.
Councillor Will Rowlands, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “It is positive news that not only has the initial preparation work got underway but also that we are able to reuse the existing bridge abutments, minimising cost and disruption. Kelsey Park remains a much loved and visited park, which is abundantly clear to anyone who visits the park, with the new bridge, once installed, a great place to spot wildlife and no doubt the odd selfie as well!”
Councillor Rowlands added, “The work and support of Friends of Parks groups is much needed across the borough and thank you to the Friends of Kelsey Park in this regard as well. If you are interested in the future of your local park, then please consider approaching your local Friends of Parks group.”
Confirmation that construction work is now underway followed completion of the revised design work which confirmed that the existing bridge abutments were able to be reused, without compromising the structural integrity of the bridge and helping to minimise costs and keep the project within budget.
