The current tenant at Melvin Hall in Penge has decided not to proceed with a new lease, with the council now beginning the process for seeking further community use of the building.

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Colin Smith said: “We are disappointed that our tenant has decided not to proceed with a new lease at Melvin Hall after having agreed the rent for this lease with us last year. We continued to engage with our tenant during this extended period to seek an agreement that would ensure the services that currently operate from the site could continue. After our tenant fell into rent arrears, we provided them with a 6-month notice period to agree a repayment plan and confirm whether or not they wished to proceed with the new lease, but they have taken the decision to walk away.

We will now begin the process for seeking further community use of this building and are initially looking to engage with the current sub-tenants to see if they are interested in taking a lease on similar terms, as we are sure they are also disappointed by the decision.”
