The construction of 75 new affordable apartments on brownfield land at Bromley North has reached new heights through a topping out ceremony, marked by the Mayor of Bromley.
The ceremony was held to commemorate the completion of the main structure of the building, in a major milestone for the largest development to date in the Bromley Homes for Bromley People programme. This programme is delivering affordable housing at sites across the borough to let to Bromley residents on the housing register.
The development will consist of one, two and three-bed apartments on the former car park next to Bromley North Train Station. A new square with green landscaping will be created between the two apartment buildings, offering a space for rest and play while also opening up a connection to the town centre. Three new commercial units will also be included on the ground floor of the development.
The new housing is being delivered by Bromley based-contractors Neilcott Construction Limited and is set to be completed in Spring 2027. The development has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the setting of the nearby Grade II Bromley North Station building, including through hand‑laid brickwork to the clean precast balcony details, with the support of Mae Architects, who won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2023.
The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Jonathan Andrews, said: “It was a pleasure to be part of this important milestone in delivering these much-needed new homes for Bromley residents, and I would like to thank all those involved in these works. By laying a ceremonial brick at the top of the development, alongside Madam Mayoress, I was able to mark the completion of the main structure of the building, so that attention can now turn to transforming this site into welcoming homes for our residents.”
Sites across the borough are continuing to progress as part of the Bromley Homes for Bromley People programme, including works recently getting underway at the Bellegrove housing development in St Paul’s Cray, with further options constantly being sought to help meet the borough’s housing needs.
The Bromley Homes for Bromley People programme provides homes for Bromley residents on the housing register at a range of social rent and affordable rent levels, meaning rents are set at 80 per cent of local market rent or lower. By building homes intended for this range of rent levels, the council makes best use of its land and resources, including by accessing more grant funding opportunities, as these are often only available for building properties at specific rent levels.
