A Ford transit tipper truck suspected of being used for fly-tipping has been seized, with an investigation also underway.

The latest vehicle seizure and other enforcement work, including the issuing of a £400 penalty for fly-tipping underlining the work being taken to tackle fly-tipping. This is the eighth seizure of a vehicle suspected of having been used in fly-tipping in the past 6 months. The tipper truck was seized in the vicinity of Star Lane on Friday, already loaded with garden waste. The truck now faces being crushed unless the owner of the vehicle now comes forward.

The £400 fixed penalty notice for fly-tipping was issued following CCTV evidence that showed the individual dumping rubbish in St Pauls Cray, with those fly-tippers being warned that the council will take legal action where evidence exists.

A council spokesperson said, “We are tackling fly-tipping and those who see this as a commercial business, with the latest vehicle seizure one of the ways that we are actively tackling fly-tipping. We are using all available powers using the latest technology to stop fly-tippers and where evidence exists legal action will always follow.”

The spokesperson continued, “Residents and businesses can help tackle fly-tipping by only using bonafide waste disposal operators. Remember to make checks on anyone you entrusting to dispose of your waste. Make sure that the person or company is a licensed waste carrier. Failure to make these checks could also result in prosecution if your waste is subsequently found fly tipped.”

The owner of the vehicle is being advised to come forward, with the vehicle at risk of being crushed, subject to the outcome of the investigation. The owner of the vehicle can claim it by proving their ownership along with valid insurance, with full details available by contacting the council.

Residents are reminded to always verify that any tradesperson or company they hire to remove waste holds a valid waste carrier licence. Ask to see their permit and confirm what types of waste they are authorised to handle. Residents can also check the official waste carrier register online via the Environment Agency website or by calling 03708 506 506.
