Emergency repair scams are becoming more common across the borough, prompting the warning to residents to check trader credentials and stay alert to high pressure tactics to avoid being scammed.

Residents are being reminded to exercise caution when seeking urgent help from traders such as locksmiths, plumbers, or other emergency repair services. Rogue traders frequently target individuals who are stressed, distressed, or in immediate need, increasing the risk of exorbitant charges, unnecessary work, high‑pressure tactics, poor workmanship, and difficulty obtaining redress or compensation.

Many residents turn to online searches during emergencies, which can be helpful but also risky if the trader's credentials, business ownership, and physical address are not properly checked. The appearance of a website or online advert alone cannot confirm reliability.

Choosing a reputable trader under pressure

Even during urgent situations, taking a few minutes to check reviews, verify membership of any stated trade organisations, and confirm business details can prevent significant problems later. Exceedingly cheap advertised prices - especially those appearing at the top of search results - may indicate hidden fees or deliberate misrepresentation.

Residents should request clear pricing information upfront, including callout fees, hourly rates, parts costs, other charges, and VAT. Saving screenshots of online prices or written details helps ensure clarity if disputes arise.

It is also important to note that standard cancellation rights do not apply when residents specifically request a trader to attend urgently for necessary repairs, although such rights do apply to any additional, non‑emergency work offered at the time.
