Shoppers and residents are being encouraged to borrow items from the newly opened Library of Things shop.

A range of household items, from hobbying activity equipment to small DIY tools are available for hire, often associated with a ‘one off’ job, meaning costly purchases and the associated environmental impact could be avoided.

The initial set-up costs have been funded from the council’s carbon offset fund, with the Library of Things hiring kiosk being hosted by Greener and Cleaner Bromley in their newly launched eco-hub premises.

Councillor Will Harmer, Chairman of Environment Committee and Bromley Town Ward Councillor, who was present on the opening day said, “A big welcome to Bromley to the Library of Things and with thanks to Greener and Cleaner Bromley for hosting the Library of Things at the newly launched eco-hub.  If you are in Bromley, it is well worth popping in and visiting this innovative shop and spending a little time familiarising yourself with what is available or look online.  We don’t necessarily need to purchase an ever-expanding inventory of possessions but instead borrow them only when we need them, lessening the environmental impact of manufacturing these items.”

The items available for borrowing hire range from hobbying activity items such as sewing machines, metal detectors, camping equipment, to DIY equipment, such as drills, pressure washers and hedge trimmers, and more.  The items can all be borrowed for a small daily cost, with residents able to reserve items online ready for collection from the self-service kiosk in the hub, at The Glades shopping centre in Bromley, a short walk away from Bromley South Station.
