The London Mayor and Greater London Assembly elections were held on Thursday 2 May 2024. Once the count is complete, you can find results for these elections on our website.
A council by-election in the Shortlands and Park Langley ward also took place on this day.
Who can vote in this election?
So long as they are registered to vote, people who can vote (the franchise) in this election are:
- British (or British Overseas Territory) Citizens residing in the United Kingdom
- Qualifying Commonwealth citizens
- Citizens of the Republic of Ireland
- European Union citizens
Please note: British citizens living overseas (who are not Members of the Armed Forces, Crown Servants, British Council employees or their spouse or civil partner) are not entitled to vote in this election.
Voting
There will be three ballot papers issued to you
- Voting for the London Mayor (pink ballot paper) - you have one vote (X) for the candidate you wish to the Mayor of London. They are elected using the ‘first past the post system’.
- Voting for the Constituency London Assembly Member (yellow ballot paper) - you have one vote (X) for the candidate you wish to represent the Bexley and Bromley constituency. The Constituency Members are elected using the ‘first past the post system’.
- Voting for the London-wide Assembly Members (orange ballot paper) - you have one vote for the candidate you wish to represent the whole of London on the London Assembly. London-wide Assembly Members are elected using a form of proportional representation called the ‘Modified D’Hondt Formula’.
Voter ID
Following the introduction of the Elections Act 2022 electors must show one of the valid forms of ID to be able to vote a polling station at this election.
If electors do not have any of the accepted forms of ID they can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC).

Postal voting
You can apply to vote by post. To ensure that you receive your postal vote at the earliest opportunity, please apply as soon as you can.
Due to the statutory timetable, postal vote packs cannot be printed until nominations close in the middle of April, which means these may not be dispatched until 7 to 10 days before the day of poll. Please see the key dates below for details. If this is not suitable you may wish to apply for a proxy vote instead.
Proxy voting
You can apply to vote by proxy. This is a person who you choose to vote on your behalf at your polling station.
