The Waldo Road Reuse and Recycling Centre is set to reopen in November following major once in a generation upgrade work to the depot infrastructure, including the waste transfer station.
A booking system will initially be in operation to help maximise efficiency, avoid potential local congestion and best manage demand. The welcome news followed the temporary closure of the borough’s popular Reuse and Recycling site last year for major upgrade work in the wider depot area. The work includes the installation of new drainage and a fire suppression system at the nearby waste transfer station, which is part of the depot. The exact date for the reopening will be announced nearer the time, with the opening anticipated to be in the middle of the month.
Councillor Josh Coldspring-White, Executive Councillor for Environment said, “I am pleased at last to be able to share some positive news about the re-opening of Waldo Road. A big thank you to residents for your patience as the end is now in sight. We will confirm more detail about the opening in the coming weeks as plans and work progress further.”
Resident recycling collections were prioritised during the depot upgrade work, with a temporary paper storage hangar sited in the area where the Reuse and Recycling Centre is located, with plans now to relocate the hangar as the depot work continues, which will allow the Centre to reopen in a slightly reconfigured way.
The temporary weekend disposal site at Baths Road, which opened in January in support of residents will remain open for weekend appointments until Waldo Road reopens. Weekend garden waste disposal sites across the borough, also in support of residents, remain open, with their planned closure at the end of October, when the gardening season is coming to an end.
