Construction of the new West Wickham Leisure Centre will get underway in the coming weeks after the application was unanimously approved at Development Control Committee on 27 November.
The proposals include a gym that is 40 per cent larger than the previous one, a competition-length swimming pool, changing rooms, a new reception area and a café. The proposed design for the new leisure facility features a red brick exterior.
Planning approval follows the recent completion of demolition works of the former leisure centre. It was beyond economic repair after structural issues were identified. The demolition progressed on an advanced schedule to ensure the new centre is built as soon as possible. The learner pool was not included in the demolition and is being refurbished. The £22m project will see a new leisure centre delivered in West Wickham and is expected to reopen in early 2028.
Councillor Alexa Michael, Chairman of Development Control Committee, said: “This is a high-quality application, with an attractive design inspired by the newly reopened West Wickham Library. I was delighted that the Committee could unanimously approve the application, which will significantly enhance the borough’s leisure provision. I am sure the new leisure centre will be much enjoyed by local residents once it reopens.”
Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, said: “This is welcome news that allows the council to press ahead with works on site to deliver this new leisure centre for West Wickham and the wider borough. We have been moving at pace to get to this stage as we needed to move ahead with the rebuild. This is a significant investment from the council which we have prioritised because we know how important the centre and pool is to residents. It will ensure provision is available long into the future.”
The Development Control Committee resolved to grant planning permission subject to the prior completion of a legal agreement.
Further updates about the leisure centre works will be provided.
