Our Occupational Therapy service (OT) provides home adaptations and related equipment for disabled children after assessment if necessary. There are OT colleagues in Housing services, the NHS and Education who provide a different occupational therapy role.
Some of the areas that Children’s Social Care Occupational Therapy (CSCOT) will assess:
- access to and from the home
- access within the home, to a bedroom, washing/toileting facility, to a family room
- for managing more easily in your home such as reducing lifting and carrying of the child or young person (C/YP)
Following OT assessment, a referral for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) may be made on your behalf to Bromley Council’s Home Improvement Agency (HIA) as it is the HIA who will co-ordinate the major adaptation process. A DFG is a grant, non-means tested for children, which can support home adaptations based on assessed need.
If you have had a CSCOT service previously
Please continue to check that the adaptations and the equipment we have issued for your child are working well. Do use the moving and handling, seating and other plans provided.
Adaptations needing repair
If an installed adaptation like a shower in the wet room needs repair, please call the warranty or servicing company using the details provided to you by the HIA.
It is strongly advised that when the servicing/maintenance warranty expires, that you take out a further plan, so you are always covered for regular servicing, maintenance and repairs. If you are a resident of a housing association, they may take on this responsibility, so please contact them for assistance through their repair’s helpline.
Broken equipment
If the specialist equipment provided by our service needs repair, please call Inspire Medicare, our equipment provider on 01322 520 560.
Do let the OT service who provided the equipment know as they may be able to help. It is advised that you cease to use the adaptation/equipment until it is repaired.
If your situation changes
Contact our CSCOT service if there are any changes to you or your child’s situation at home which may require our intervention. For example if a difficulty has arisen with moving and handling due to your child’s needs or your own needs.
Our hours of work are Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
Make a referral to CSCOT
Families and professionals can make a referral to CSCOT. The CSCOT team looks at long-term needs, therefore, to support the C/YP’s potential, we firstly need to know the therapy plan and goals they are currently working on.
