An armed forces flag raising ceremony took place in Bromley town centre today (Wednesday 24 June) during Armed Forces Week as the borough recognises and celebrates those who serve.
Proceedings were led by the Mayor of Bromley and saw guests come together at the Bromley War Memorial to show their support for the armed forces community. The Last Post was played on the bugle during the ceremony, which takes place each year in the borough. A two-minutes silence was also held and wreaths were laid at the War Memorial.
The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Christine Harris, said: “The flag we raised today stands as a symbol of our enduring respect and our steadfast support for those who serve our nation. Bromley are proud of our armed forces community, especially as the borough with the most veterans in London. As we continue to show our appreciation this week and beyond, I encourage residents to join us in Queens Gardens on Saturday to further celebrate those who serve or have served.”
The Mayor was joined at the flag raising ceremony by councillors, council staff and guests, including the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Sunil Gupta; the Leader of the Council, Councillor Colin Smith; Bromley’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Mike Botting; the President of the Orpington and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, Councillor Kim Botting; the Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Amanda Spence; and Deputy Lieutenant Deirdre Barr.
On Saturday 27 June, a special family-friendly event taking place in Queens Gardens, Bromley for Armed Forces Day. Residents are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy a range of children’s activities and entertainment between 10am and 3pm.
