Traffic signs

The aim of new traffic signs are to regulate, advise and give directional information to the road users.

Signs include:

  • Regulatory signs - signs with red circles.
  • Warning signs – mostly triangular.
  • Direction signs – mostly rectangular (destinations and map type)
  • Information signs – mostly rectangular

Requests for new traffic signs are managed by our Traffic Team. Consideration will always be given to requests, but it is important to remember that strict rules and regulations cover all road markings and signs on the public highway.

Additional Signage – Decluttering

Too many traffic signs can affect the environment and can dilute more important messages, resulting in information overload for drivers. Therefore, the Council’s decluttering strategy is to reduce the amount of signage on Borough roads by:

Removing unnecessary signs when a new traffic scheme is introduced.

Rejecting request for signs unless it is a legal requirement or where there is a safety imperative.
