main content Homelessness

Homelessness is a serious issue that affects many people across London. People may qualify for help in getting accommodation if they are judged by the Council to be unintentionally homeless and within a priority need group.

The Council’s Housing Options and Assessments team will provide advice and general assistance to any one with a query or problem regarding housing issues or homelessness.

For information about eligibility, what will be offered, the steps to follow and contacts please refer to A guide to homelessness.

What to do if you think you may become homeless?

Being faced with having nowhere to live can be a frightening and traumatic experience. At Bromley we have a range of schemes that may be able to help you to stay in your current home or, if that is not possible, to find a new one.

If you are worried about losing your home within the next month, you need to make an appointment to see a Housing Options and Assessments Officer. They will firstly look at whether we can help to prevent the homelessness occurring. If this is not possible, we will undertake an assessment of your circumstances and provide advice on the full range of options that may be available to you to help you in looking for alternative accommodation.

Bromley has a considerable shortage of housing association homes to rent. There are far more people wanting housing association homes than there are properties available. This means that most people who apply to be housed will be unsuccessful or face a very long wait. This is especially true for certain types of property, such as ground floor flats and larger family sized houses.

Housing Options and Assessments can help you decide on the best options for finding and keeping a suitable home. Our Options Team can:

  • offer help and advice to assist you to stay in your home: our first aim is to prevent homelessness from occurring
  • offer advice and assistance if you are having problems with your tenancy or landlord, such as repair problems, rent arrears
  • advise you on problems with your mortgage such as mortgage arrears and mortgage repossession and assist you to get expert money advice
  • offer you information and advice about our mortgage rescue scheme
  • advise you about being rehoused and work with you to help you find and keep a suitable home
  • advise you about tenancy deposit protection schemes and obtaining privately rented property
